In 1991, Carol Sissom was a freelance journalist and a single mother when she wrote a 20-year anniversary article about the greatest unsolved murder mystery in the history of Indianapolis, Indiana - The LaSalle Street Murders – which were commited on December 1st, 1971.
The brutal slayings of three young men was a notorious triple homicide that launched the most intense investigation in the history of the Indianapolis Police Department. Carol quickly became addicted to the case – and after writing her article began to uncover leads and witnesses that the police had overlooked in 1971. She eventually identified a suspect that she hoped would be profiled on the television show, Unsolved Mysteries. Because of the abundance of material her research had uncovered, she decided to write a book about the murders. In the midst of her research, she met an elderly man who claimed to have ESP; an ex-husband of one of the lovers of the victims. They shared a common interest about the murders and this grandfatherly figure insisted on helping Carol write her book. He told her that she had identified the correct killer – confirming it with his alleged psychic abilities - and offered other information. Carol admired his knowledge - he seemed to know more details about the murders than anyone she had encountered while working on the case. Together, they penned several chapters and he assisted Carol in her attempts to solve the case. Over a period of several months they became good friends – until one day, to Carol's horror – she realized her original suspect was not the LaSalle Street murderer – the real killer was her friend and the co-writer of her book. Carol reeled at the thought that she had been writing a book about a triple homicide with the actual killer! After she regained her composure, Carol began her own undercover assignment - determined to put the real killer behind bars; especially when she began to realize that the police had no intention of – and possibly had a secret agenda against – arresting this suspect. With a handful of police officers who believed in her, she fought a lonely battle against an indifferent and sometimes hostile legal and political system for four years until she finally achieved success. The LaSalle Street Murders is a true account of her journey – and a chronology of her life – as she details the relationship she had with a triple murderer – and the dangerous odyssey she embarked upon in order to put him in jail and solve the murders. This is a chilling account, based on a true story, in the tradition of Truman Capote's In Cold Blood and Vincent Bugliosi's Helter Skelter. |
